In her solo display Accumulating the Sky, Mining the Milk, Amber Cowan emphasizes the legacy of colour. Via intricately layered dioramas of pressed glass, the Philadelphia-based artist explores the histories of lavender, jade, and opaque white. Her assemblages meld customized and located items sourced from essentially defunct factories in the US, a lot of which produced a selected palette of colours just like the sky blue of “Ecco to the Bridesmaid: ‘I Know No longer What Has Came about to Your Pod.” Constituted of two symmetrically formed panels, the diptych blends an array of fabrics and generational references, together with the 1992 Sega online game Ecco the Dolphin and the brand of Louis Convenience Tiffany, the artist in the back of the long-lasting opalescent stained glass lamps.
Very similar to Cowan’s previous works, those new reliefs are brimming with foliage, plant life, and small baubles that encircle a scenic part embedded within the middle. Figurative statues just like the artist’s ordinary bridesmaid persona, miniature fowl sculptures, chalices, and Greco-style columns infuse the items with narrative element.
Accumulating the Sky, Mining the Milk is on view thru November 19 at Heller Gallery in New York. In finding extra of Cowan’s paintings on Instagram.
